An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your smartphone. Instead of buying and inserting a plastic SIM card, you download a mobile plan over the internet — usually by scanning a QR code or tapping an install link from your eSIM provider.
How does an eSIM work?
- Purchase a data plan from an eSIM provider for your destination
- Receive a QR code or activation link by email or in the provider app
- Scan or tap to install the eSIM profile on your phone
- Enable the eSIM line in Settings when you arrive — data works immediately
eSIM vs physical SIM for travel
| Factor | Travel eSIM | Physical SIM |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Minutes — before you fly | Find a shop at destination |
| Keep home number | Yes — dual SIM on most phones | Often requires swapping cards |
| Cost | Usually much cheaper than roaming | Varies by country and shop |
| Reuse | Buy new plan per trip | May need new card per country |
Which phones support eSIM?
Most iPhones from XS/XR onward, Google Pixel 3 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20+ and recent flagships, and many iPads support eSIM. Check Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) for “Add eSIM” or “Add Cellular Plan”.
