Twenty gigabytes in Spain for nine dollars. That is forty-five cents per gigabyte — less than half what Ubigi charges for its own one-off travel plan in the same country, and cheaper than anything in the travel eSIM market at that size. The catch is not hidden and not small: it is a monthly plan that renews until you cancel it, so it sits in a different part of the catalogue from the plans comparison pages usually show you. What is Ubigi?

Ubigi is the consumer brand of Transatel, a French mobile operator that has been part of the NTT group since 2019. Data-only eSIM plans in 190+ destinations, for phones, laptops, tablets and cars.

Ubigi is the odd one out in this market, and its history explains the catalogue. Transatel launched Ubigi in 2017 — earlier than most of the names travelers recognise — but its core business was never tourists. It sells industrial and IoT connectivity, which is why Ubigi eSIMs turn up factory-fitted in cars and why its plans have always been built to work on Windows laptops and cellular iPads, not only phones. Being owned by NTT, the parent of Japan's largest mobile operator, shows up in its Japan coverage too.

That three-catalogue structure is the thing to understand. The one-off plans are what a traveler expects: buy 10GB, use it for 30 days, done. The monthly plans are a subscription — the same eSIM, a fixed allowance every month, renewing until you cancel. The annual bundles spread a large allowance across twelve months. How much does a Ubigi eSIM cost?

Two structural quirks are worth flagging before the tables. Europe is Ubigi's home turf, and it shows. France leads at $1.00 per gigabyte, with Portugal, the UK and Switzerland at $1.10 and Spain, Italy and Greece at $1.20. Switzerland being that cheap is genuinely unusual — normally one of the priciest destinations in any travel eSIM catalogue, on premium networks outside the EU.

Asia is competitive but not exceptional. Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore land between $1.20 and $1.30, South Korea and Turkey at $1.40. Japan is the surprise at $1.65 — despite the NTT ownership, one of the pricier destinations here.

The UAE and Mexico are the outliers. At $2.10 and $2.90 per gigabyte they cost double to triple the European rate, and Mexico has no tier above 10GB at all.

The monthly plans are where Ubigi gets cheap

Same eSIM, same networks, roughly half the price per gigabyte. In France, Spain and Italy a 20GB monthly plan costs $9.00 — against $10.00 to $12.00 for a one-off 10GB. You get double the data for less money. The trade-off is that it is a subscription: it renews every month until you cancel, so for a two-week holiday you buy one month and cancel before the next charge.

Read the difference column. In eight of these destinations the monthly plan is 40% or more cheaper per gigabyte than the one-off equivalent, and in France, Spain and Italy it is 55% cheaper while carrying twice the data. India and South Korea are the sharpest reversals: their one-off plans are mid-table at $1.40 to $1.50 per gigabyte, and their monthly 20GB plans land at $0.70.

Whether that is a good deal depends entirely on you remembering to cancel. If you travel a few times a year, it may be worth keeping the subscription running rather than rebuying — Ubigi's monthly rates in Europe are lower than most providers' one-off rates anywhere. Which Ubigi plan fits which trip

• A weekend, light use — the one-off 1GB or 3GB plan. Both run 30 days in most countries, and per gigabyte they are the worst value Ubigi sells, so only pick them if your needs really are that small.
• A normal one- to two-week trip — the one-off 10GB. This is the tier Ubigi prices most competitively, and in Europe it is often the cheapest 10GB on a comparison page.
• Working abroad, or a month away — the monthly plan, cancelled after the trip. In Europe that is $9 to $14 for 20GB, well under a dollar per gigabyte.
• Travelling several times a year to the same country — keep the monthly plan running and skip the rebuy entirely. This is the case Ubigi's catalogue is quietly built for.
